Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic condition that occurs when hair follicles in the skin become blocked.  The exact cause is unknown, but it is not caused by infection or uncleanliness. It cannot be spread to other people by contact.  The condition causes red, painful bumps that may break open or form tunnels under the skin.  Scarring is common.  The condition usually presents after puberty and forms in areas where skin rubs together such as armpits, buttocks, breasts, and the groin.  Hidradenitis suppurativa is an inflammatory condition that can persist for many years and interfere with quality of life.  Medications and surgery can help manage symptoms and prevent complications.
